And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the Eternal his God, to keep all the words of this Torah and these statutes, to do them.
Torah Temimah points to Sanhedrin 22a.
TT lemma: לִשְׁמֹר אֶת כׇּל דִּבְרֵי הַתּוֹרָה.
English: ‘To keep all the words of this Torah’ – so that this Torah not be upon him as a burden.
Derash on the goal of study (Bavli) — the king’s learning is meant to make the Torah part of him rather than a weight.
The king’s lifelong reading is intended to make the Torah light and natural to him, not a heavy external obligation.
