You shall not sacrifice to the Eternal your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect of a serious kind, for that is abhorrent to the Eternal your God.

Sefaria · Sifrei Devarim

Core Text of Chazal

תניא, ר׳ יהושע אומר, כי תועבת ה׳ אלהיך הוא, הוא תועבה ואין הולד תועבה.

English: It was taught: Rabbi Yehoshua says, “For it is an abomination to the Eternal your God” — it [the parent animal] is an abomination, but its offspring is not an abomination.

On the daf / in context

The singular “hu” is taken to limit the disqualification to the animal itself; its offspring remain eligible for the altar (consistent with the Mishnah in Temurah).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The pronoun “hu” is read as excluding the offspring from the status of to’evah.

What Is Learned

Although certain animals are themselves forbidden as offerings, their offspring are permitted.
