You shall not sacrifice to the Eternal your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect of a serious kind, for that is abhorrent to the Eternal your God.

Sefaria · Sifrei Devarim

Core Text of Chazal

תניא, מניין לקדשים ששחטם חוץ לזמנם וחוץ למקומם שעובר בל״ת, ת״ל לא תזבח לה׳ אלהיך כל דבר רע.

English: It was taught: From where do we know that one who slaughters sacrificial animals outside their proper time or outside their proper place transgresses a negative commandment? From the verse “You shall not sacrifice to the Eternal your God any evil thing.”

On the daf / in context

“Kol davar ra” is read as including any improper act of slaughter that renders the offering piggul or otherwise invalid through speech or intention concerning time or place.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The words “any evil thing” expand the prohibition beyond physical blemish.

What Is Learned

Slaughtering a sacrifice outside its proper time or place is itself a violation of this negative commandment.
