Core Text

English: "Year by year" — It was taught: From where do we know that a firstborn whose year has passed is not disqualified from one year to the next? From the verse "you shall eat it year by year."

On the daf / in context: Although ideally eaten within its first year, a firstborn that survives beyond that year remains valid for consumption.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bekhoros) — a firstborn is not disqualified by the passage of its year.

What Is Learned

A firstborn animal whose first year has ended is not thereby disqualified; it may still be eaten.
