Core Text

English: "And you shall leave it within your gates" — and elsewhere it says "and you shall give it to the Levi, the stranger, the orphan and the widow"; how is this? Here refers to the dry season, there to the rainy season.

On the daf / in context: In the summer the owner leaves the produce at the threshing floor for the poor to take; in the rainy season he distributes it personally from his house.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — two modes of distribution according to the season.

What Is Learned

In the dry season ma’aser ani is left at the gates for the poor to collect; in the rainy season it is distributed by the owner from his house.
