English: “A sheep of the sheep” — It was taught: “But this you shall not eat \ldots” this you may not eat, yet you may eat that which comes with one sign. What is that? An unclean animal born of a clean mother whose conception was from a clean father. One might have thought even if its conception was from an unclean animal — therefore the verse says “a sheep of the sheep” — until its father is a ram and its mother a ewe.

On the daf / in context: Both parents must be of the clean species for the offspring of a hybrid situation to be permitted.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Chullin) — both parents must be clean for the offspring to be permitted.

What Is Learned

An animal born of a clean mother is permitted only if its father as well was of the clean species.
