And all its spoil you shall gather into the midst of its open square and burn with fire the city and all its spoil completely for Hashem your God, and it shall be a mound forever; it shall not be rebuilt.
English: “And all its spoil” — its spoil, and not the spoil of Heaven. From here they said: The consecrated items in it shall be redeemed, terumos shall be left to rot, second tithe and sacred writings shall be stored away.
On the daf / in context: Property already belonging to Heaven is excluded from the ordinary destruction of the city’s spoil and is treated according to its own laws.
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — excluding consecrated property from the spoil.
What Is Learned
Consecrated items, terumos, second tithe, and sacred writings that are in the city are not burned with the ordinary spoil but are handled according to their respective laws.
