וּסְקַלְתּ֣וֹ בָאֲבָנִ֣ים וָמֵ֔ת כִּ֣י בִקֵּ֗שׁ לְהַדִּֽיחֲךָ֙ מֵעַל֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ הַמּוֹצִאֲךָ֛ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃

And you shall stone him with stones so that he dies, because he sought to draw you away from Hashem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

כִּי בִקֵּשׁ לְהַדִּיחֲךָ — עַל שֶׁבִּקֵּשׁ לְהַדִּיחֲךָ הוּא נֶהֱרָג, וְלֹא עַל שֶׁהִדִּיחַ בְּפֹעַל.

English: “Because he sought to draw you away” — he is put to death for having sought to lead you astray, even if the attempt did not succeed.

On the daf / in context: The verse emphasizes the intent of the meisit; the capital liability attaches to the attempt itself.
