And you shall stone him with stones so that he dies, because he sought to draw you away from Hashem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Classical source: Sifrei Devarim (on the meisit).
English: “Because he sought to draw you away” — he is put to death for having sought to lead you astray, even if the attempt did not succeed.
Derash on the verb “sought” (Sifrei) — liability for the attempt, not only for success.
The enticer to idolatry is liable for the very attempt to draw Israel away from Hashem.
