If the place that Hashem your God will choose to put His Name there is too far from you, then you shall slaughter from your herd and from your flock that Hashem has given you, as I have commanded you, and you shall eat within your gates according to all the desire of your soul.

English: “And you shall slaughter” — It was taught: “And you shall slaughter” — one might have thought that intention for shechitah is required. Therefore the verse states regarding sacrificial animals (at the beginning of Parashas Kedoshim) “for your acceptance you shall slaughter it” — slaughter it with your knowledge. And since the Merciful One revealed this regarding sacrificial animals, it follows that ordinary animals do not require intention.

On the daf / in context: Intention is required for the slaughter of kodashim but not for ordinary chullin.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the absence of a requirement of intention for ordinary shechitah.

What Is Learned

Ordinary (chullin) shechitah does not require specific intention; sacrificial slaughter does.
