Let Me alone and I will destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make you a nation far more numerous than they.”

English: R’ Yochanan said in the name of R’ Yose: Every statement issued by the Holy One for good, even conditionally, is not retracted, as it is said, “Leave Me alone and I will destroy them… and I will make you into a mighty nation.” Although Moshe sought mercy and the decree was annulled, the promise was nevertheless fulfilled in his descendants, as it says, “The sons of Moshe: Gershom and Eliezer; and the sons of Eliezer: Rechavyah the chief… and the sons of Rechavyah multiplied greatly.” Rav Yosef taught: “Multiplied greatly” means more than six hundred thousand.
Custom (good decrees not revoked)
A divine promise of good is not withdrawn even when the accompanying threat is averted by prayer; it is fulfilled in Moshe’s descendants.
