Rashi on Deuteronomy 3:2:1 (Genesis Rabbah 42:8)

Core Text of Chazal / Classic Source

Core Text

ובסיחון לא הוצרך לומר "אל תירא אותו", אלא מתיירא היה משה שלא תעמוד לו זכות ששימש לאברהם, שנאמר (בראשית י״ד) "ויבא הפליט", והוא עוג.

English: Why does this verse say “Do not fear him” about Og, when that reassurance was not stated about Sihon? Moses feared that Og’s merit for having served Abraham might protect him; the “fugitive” who came to tell Abraham of Lot’s capture was Og.

On the source / in context: Rashi explains Moses’ fear of Og by connecting the “fugitive” in Genesis 14:13 with Og, drawing on Genesis Rabbah 42:8. This is the identified classical source for the EXTRA page.

What Is Learned

The command not to fear Og addresses Moses’ concern that Og’s earlier role in alerting Abraham might give him merit that could protect him.
