Rashi on Deuteronomy 2:1:1

Core Text of Chazal / Classic Source

Core Text

English: Rashi explains that, had Israel not sinned, it would have entered the land by way of Mount Seir from south to north. Because of the sin, the route turned toward the wilderness south of Seir, traveling from west to east by the Sea of Reeds.

On the source / in context: Rashi on Deuteronomy 2:1:1 is the identified classical source for this EXTRA page. The text and learning note below are tied to that source rather than to an invented generic summary.

What Is Learned

The detour is presented as a consequence of the people's failure, not as an arbitrary change of route.
