וַיִּמָּסְרוּ מֵאַלְפֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל — מַגִּיד הַכָּתוּב שֶׁהָיוּ בְּנֵי אָדָם צַדִּיקִים וּכְשֵׁרִים, וּמָסְרוּ נַפְשָׁם עַל הַדָּבָר. רַבִּי נָתָן אוֹמֵר: אֲחֵרִים מְסָרוּם — אִישׁ פְּלוֹנִי כָּשֵׁר יֵצֵא, אִישׁ פְּלוֹנִי צַדִּיק יֵצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר הַמּוֹדָעִי אוֹמֵר: בֹּא וּרְאֵה כַּמָּה חִבָּתָן שֶׁל רוֹעֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל — עַד שֶׁלֹּא שָׁמְעוּ שֶׁמִּיתָתוֹ שֶׁל מֹשֶׁה מְעַכֶּבֶת לְמִלְחֶמֶת מִדְיָן מַה כְּתִיב בָּהֶן? עוֹד מְעַט וּסְקָלוּנִי. מִשֶּׁשָּׁמְעוּ — הִתְחִילוּ מִתְחַבְּאִים, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן נִמְסְרוּ עַל כָּרְחָם.
