Who has counted the dust of Yaakov, or numbered the stock of Israel? May my soul die the death of the upright, and may my end be like his.

Core Text

English: It was taught: Even that wicked one set a sign for himself. He said: “May my soul die the death of the upright” — if my soul dies the death of the upright, let my end be like his; and if not, I am going to my people.

Type of Learning

Reading Bilam’s wish as a conditional self-judgment.

What Is Learned

Bilam himself framed the test: share the end of the upright, or return to his own people without that portion.
