The Complete Passuk

And the angel of Hashem said to him: Why have you struck your she-donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, for the way is precipitate against me.

Core Text

English: It was taught: From where is notarikon [derived] from the Torah? The school of R. Nassan said: “For the way is yarat against me” — yarat: she feared, she saw, she turned aside.

Type of Learning

Notarikon (letter-expansion) as a middah of interpretation.

What Is Learned

The rare word ירט encodes the donkey’s three responses — fear, sight, and turning — already latent in the letters of the verse.
