Moshe did as the Lord commanded, and they ascended Hor haHar before the eyes of the whole congregation. Moshe stripped Aharon of his garments and put them on Elazar his son; and Aharon died there on the top of the mountain, and Moshe and Elazar came down from the mountain.
English of Core Text: “Moshe stripped Aharon of his garments” — the garments of the High Priesthood… He said to him, “Enter the cave,” and he entered; he saw a bed prepared and a lamp burning… “Close your eyes,” and he closed them. Immediately Moshe longed for that very death.
On the daf / in context: Classical midrash describes Aharon’s death as peaceful and ordered: the garments are transferred to Elazar in Aharon’s presence, then Aharon enters a prepared cave, lies on a bed, and expires without the Angel of Death’s struggle. Moshe later requested the same death (“as Aharon your brother died”).
Type of Learning: Narrative derasha / manner of the death of the righteousWhat Is Learned: Aharon’s death is the paradigm of a peaceful, prepared passing with succession already secured; Moshe desired that same death.
