Only do not rebel against Hashem, and you — do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their shade has departed from them, and Hashem is with us — do not fear them.

Source Citation

Rashi / Sotah 35a: סָר צִלָּם — their shield; the virtuous among them have died (Iyov). Another reading: the shade of the Omnipresent has departed from them.

Core Text of Chazal / Classic Source

Core Text

English: Their shade has departed from them — their shield and strength; the worthy among them have died — Iyov who had protected them.

Type of Learning

Fear as rebellion; shade as merit.

What Is Learned

TT silent; Rashi’s reading turns “shade” into the merit of the righteous of the nations — once that is gone, the land’s people are bread for Israel.
