Send for yourself men to scout the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; one man each for his father’s tribe you shall send, every one a prince among them.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: Reish Lakish said: “Send for yourself” — of your own mind. Would a person choose a bad portion for himself? And that is what is written: “And the matter was good in my eyes.” Reish Lakish said: “In my eyes” — and not in the eyes of the Omnipresent.

Type of Learning

Precise wording — “לך” assigns the initiative to Moshe, not as a binding command from Hashem.

What Is Learned

The scouting mission was permitted at Israel’s request; it was good in Moshe’s eyes, not presented as Hashem’s preferred plan.
