Source Citation

Torah Temimah cites Megillah 21b (and the parallel Sifrei) on the orientation of the lamps: “אל מול פני המנורה” teaches that the six outer lamps are angled toward the central western lamp, and that central lamp toward the Shechinah.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “Toward the face of the Menorah they shall give light” — the lamps face the Menorah and the Menorah faces the lamps: three toward the east, three toward the west, and one in the middle; all face the middle one. From here Rabbi Natan said: the middle one is honored.

Type of Learning

Gezeirah shavah / narrative detail — the Torah’s placement of the lamps models honor toward the central light (and, by extension, toward the Divine Presence).

What Is Learned

The lighting arrangement itself teaches that every subsidiary light is directed toward a primary focus. The physical orientation of the Menorah becomes a lesson in hierarchy of honor.
