Remove male and female alike; put them outside the camp so that they do not defile the camp of those in whose midst I dwell.

English: “Male or female” — comparable to male and female who become a primary source of impurity; this excludes an earthenware vessel which does not become a primary source of impurity.
In context: The gender language is read as limiting the rule to persons (or entities) capable of becoming av ha-tumah.
