Source Citation

Sifra / Arachin 6b (Rashi) — one already going out to execution: a vow of his erech has no validity; he has neither market price nor fixed valuation.

Sefaria

Chazal

English: “Any cherem devoted from among men” — one going out to be executed, and another says “his valuation is upon me”: he has said nothing. “He shall surely be put to death” — he is already on the way to death; therefore he has neither market value nor fixed valuation.

Type of Learning

Halachic boundary — when erech cannot attach.

What Is Learned

Valuation assumes a living person with standing. Once the death sentence is in motion, the Torah closes the door on monetary substitution for that life.
