The Complete Passuk

If a man consecrates his house as holy to Hashem, the kohen shall assess it, whether good or bad; as the kohen assesses it, so it shall stand.

Source Citation

Sifra, Bechukotai, Chapter 10 — consecrations are not redeemed by rough approximation; the kohen’s assessment stands; owner who adds a fifth has priority over another bidder.

Sefaria

Chazal

English: “The kohen shall assess it, whether good or bad; as the kohen assesses it, so it shall stand” — consecrations are not redeemed by approximation. If the owner says twenty and another says twenty, the owner takes precedence because he adds a fifth.

Type of Learning

Halachic procedure — assessment and owner’s fifth.

What Is Learned

House-consecration is not a private appraisal. The kohen’s judgment fixes the sum, and the original owner’s right of redemption (with a fifth) is structurally preferred.
