Parashas Bechukosai · Passuk context
And if from sixty years old and above, if a male, the value shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels.
Rashi from Arachin 19a — in old age a woman’s relative valuation rises toward the man’s; folk saying: old man is a breach, old woman a treasure in the house.
English: “And if from sixty years” — when one reaches old age, the woman is closer in standing to the man; the man decreases more than a third (50→15), the woman only a third (30→10). As people say: an old man in the house is a breach in the house; an old woman in the house is a good sign in the house.
Halachic scale + folk derasha — relative valuation in old age.
The fixed table is not purely arithmetic. Chazal notice that the drop for women is gentler, and they ground it in the social perception of elder roles in the household.
