Source Citation

Sifra, Bechukotai, Chapter 5:5 (Rashi) — keri = irregular / occasional observance; seven additional punishments corresponding to the sins.

Sefaria

Chazal

English: “If you walk with Me keri” — from the language of mikreh, something that occurs only occasionally; if you follow the commandments irregularly. “Seven according to your sins” — seven other punishments, corresponding in number to your sins.

Type of Learning

Lexical derasha — keri as sporadic observance; measure of seven.

What Is Learned

Casual, intermittent obedience is itself a form of walking “contrary.” The response is not random severity but a counted correspondence: seven for the pattern of neglect.
