דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אִ֕ישׁ כִּ֥י יַפְלִ֖א נֶ֑דֶר בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ נְפָשֹׁ֖ת לַֽיהֹוָֽה׃

Torah Temimah: “nefashot” excludes a dead person from valuation.

“נְפָשׁוֹת” — לְהוֹצִיא אֶת הַמֵּת.

English: “Persons (nefashot)” — to exclude the dead.

A corpse has no erech; living personhood is required.
