Core Text — Sukkah 40a

English: “For you for food.” “For you” is analogous to “for food” — whose benefit and destruction occur simultaneously. This excludes wood, whose benefit comes after its destruction, and excludes soaking and laundering, whose benefit comes after their destruction.

Type of Learning

Classical derasha (Bavli Sukkah) — comparison of benefit and destruction.

What Is Learned

“For you for food” limits permitted uses of Shemittah produce to those whose benefit and destruction occur at the same time. Wood (for fuel) and materials used for soaking or laundering are excluded.
