Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Sifra

English: “And for your servant and for your maidservant.” Why is this said? Because it is written “and the seventh year you shall release it and abandon it, and the poor of your people shall eat” — I have only the poor; from where [do I know] even the wealthy? The verse says “for you and for your servant and for your maidservant.”

Type of Learning

Classical derasha (Sifra).

What Is Learned

Although another verse mentions the poor, the present verse teaches that the wealthy as well may eat Shemittah produce.
