EXTRA 1 on Kedoshim 20:22

Side-ring EXTRA · Equal obligation of shemirah and asiyah

Source

Torah Temimah is silent on 20:22. Sifra reads the double phrase as assigning both “heeding” and “doing” to statutes and to judgments alike, and clarifies the nature of the inheritance of the Land.

Core Text

Core Text — Sifra, Kedoshim, Chapter 9

English: “And you shall heed all of My statutes and all of My judgments, and you shall do them” — to assign heeding and doing for statutes, and heeding and doing for judgments. “and the land will not vomit you out, whither I bring you to dwell in it” — I bring you there only in order that you inherit it, not as the Canaanites who were merely caretakers of the place until you came.

Type of Learning

Equal weight of chukim and mishpatim; inheritance vs. caretaker status

What Is Learned

Both the opaque statutes and the transparent judgments demand the same pair of obligations: shemirah and asiyah. The Land itself is given as inheritance, not as a temporary holding; the Canaanites were only stewards awaiting Israel’s arrival.
