Torah Temimah is silent on 20:12. Sifra defines the term “tevel” and establishes the death penalty as stoning via the formula “d’meihem bam.”

Core Text

Core Text — Sifra, Kedoshim, Chapter 10

English: “And if a man lies with his daughter-in-law… they have wrought tevel” — they have twisted the cord (of procreation). “They shall be put to death” — by stoning. You say by stoning; perhaps by one of the other death penalties stated in the Torah? Scripture says “their blood is in them,” and elsewhere (20:27) “their blood is in them.” Just as there it is stoning, so here it is stoning.

Definition of tevel + binyan av for stoning

What Is Learned

Tevel is not a vague “corruption” but a concrete image: father and son share the same woman, twisting the generative line. The phrase “d’meihem bam” supplies the fixed rule that this penalty is stoning, the same formula that governs the ov and yid’oni.
