Side-ring EXTRA · Derekh eretz of address

Source

Torah Temimah is silent on 19:01 (the speech formula). Classical sources treat the Torah’s pattern of calling before speaking as a standing model of derekh eretz.

Core Text

Core Text — Yoma 4b

English: “And He called to Moshe and spoke” — why does calling precede speech? The Torah taught derekh eretz: a person should not say something to another unless he has first called him.

Type of Learning

Derekh eretz from the speech formula

What Is Learned

Even the opener “Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying” rests on a prior call. Address is not abrupt; the Torah models invitation before instruction.
