English: The priest shall examine the affection on the skin: if hair in the affected patch has turned white and the affection appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a leprous affection on the skin; and if the priest sees that it is a leprous affection, the priest shall pronounce the person impure.

Source Citation

Torah Temimah cites Sifra (Toras Kohanim) for the priest’s authority to assign distinct statuses to distinct signs.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Sifra

English: “And he shall examine it.” One might think the priest may not declare a person quarantined for one sign and definitively impure for another, or definitively impure for both; the text says “lesion, and he shall examine it,” and “tzaraas, and he shall examine it.”

What Is Learned

The priest may assign the appropriate status to each qualifying sign; the repeated wording supports distinct evaluations rather than one all-or-nothing status.
