וְאֵ֣ת שְׂעִ֣יר הַֽחַטָּ֗את דָּר֥שׁ דָּרַ֛שׁ משֶׁ֖ה וְהִנֵּ֣ה שׂרָ֑ף וַ֠יִּקְצֹ֠ף עַל־אֶלְעָזָ֤ר וְעַל־אִֽיתָמָר֙ בְּנֵ֣י אַֽהֲרֹ֔ן הַנּֽוֹתָרִ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר:

English: “The goat of the sin-offering was sought”: “goat” refers to Nachshon’s goat, “sin-offering” to the eighth-day sin-offering, and “sought” to the Rosh Chodesh goat. “And behold, it was burned” teaches that only one of the three was burned, not all three.

וְאֵת שְׂעִיר הַחַטָּאת דָּרֹשׁ דָּרַשׁ. תַּנְיָא, שָׂעִיר זֶה שְׂעִיר נַחְשׁוֹן, חַטָּאת זוֹ חַטַּאת שְׁמִינִי, דָּרֹשׁ – זֶה שְׂעִיר שֶׁל רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ, יָכוֹל שְׁלָשְׁתָּן נִשְׂרְפוּ? תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר וְהִנֵּה שֹׂרָף, אֶחָד נִשְׂרַף וְלֹא שְׁלָשְׁתָּן נִשְׂרְפוּ [מ].
