Core Text of Chazal

English: The Gemara derives from “in all your settlements” that the verse addresses courts: the death penalty administered by a court does not take place on Shabbos.

Type of Learning

Derash by comparing the repeated phrase “in all your settlements” with its other Torah occurrence to identify the court.

What Is Learned

Capital punishment by a Jewish court is not performed on Shabbos.
