וישמע העם את הדבר הרע. ומהו, הוא הכתוב אחריו ויאמר ד' אל משה אמור אל בני ישראל (פ' ה) , וכמוהו ויאמר ד' אל משה במדין (למעלה ד יט) וכבר פירשתי, הגם לחם יוכל תת (תה' עח כ) , כי כמוהו ויצו שחקים ממעל (שם שם כג) וכבר צוה שחקים וככה זה , ואין צורך לתיקון הגאונים שעשה ככה תמיד :

English: AND WHEN THE PEOPLE HEARD THESE EVIL TIDINGS. What evil tidings? 14 Evil tidings are recorded in verse 3 and in verse 5. Hence I.E.’s comment. The reference is to what is written afterwards, And the Lord said unto Moshe , etc. (v. 5). 15 In other words, verse 5 should come before verse 4. I.E. comments thus because verse 4 tells us, and no man did put on him his ornaments . However, verse 5 reads, And the Lord said unto Moshe…therefore now put off thy ornaments . Hence And the Lord said should be interpreted, and the Lord had said (Weiser).
