ויאמר, טעם קשה ערף. שלא ישמע מה שצוה משל לאדם הולך לדרכו במרוצה ולא ישיב עורף לקורא אליו וזה המשל בעבור שהיו ישראל בארץ מצרים עובדי ע"ג והשם שלח להם נביאים לאמר איש גלולי מצרים השליכו, כי כן כתוב , ומשה ספר זה המעשה לבנים לפני מותו, והוא שומר הטעמים לא המלות , כתוב לך רד כי שחת עמך (פ' ז) וכתיב קום רד (דבר' ט יב), ושם כתוב וישתחוו לו ויאמרו אלה אלהיך , וכתיב ועתה הניחה לי (פ' יוד) ותחתיו הרף ממני (דבר' ט יד), וכתוב ויחר אפי בהם ואכלם (פ' יוד) ותחת זה ואשמידם ואמחה את שמם (דבר' ט יד) וכתיב ואעשה אותך לגוי גדול (פ' יוד) ועצום ממנו והטעמים שוים:

English: AND THE LORD SAID. Stiffnecked means that they refuse to do as God commanded. They are like a person who runs along on his way and does not turn his head back to the one who calls him. This expression is employed with regard to the Israelites for the following reason. Scripture tells us that Israel served idols in Egypt. It reports that God sent prophets to them saying, “Let every man cast away the idols of Egypt.” 13 Ezek. 20:7. Moshe related this incident 14 The account of the golden calf. to their children 15 To the next generation. before he died. 16 In other words, the account of the making of the golden calf is recapitulated in the Book of Deuteronomy.
