Parashas Ki Sisa · EXTRA (side-ring) · Passuk 32:2
Sefaria — Ibn Ezra on Ki Sisa 32:2
English: AND AARON SAID UNTO THEM: BREAK OFF THE GOLDEN RINGS. Pareku (break off) is vocalized like barekhu (bless). It is a pi’el . It was the custom of the Egyptians to place rings in their ears. 1 The Israelites imitated the Egyptian custom. It is similarly written with regard to the Midianites, because they were Ishmaelites (Jud. 8:24). 2 Jud. 8:24 reads, For they (the Midianites, so I.E) had golden earrings because they were Ishmaelites . I.E. believes that the Ishmaelites followed the same practices as the Egyptians because the Ishmaelites are descended from Hagar the Egyptian.
