English: The Sages taught: One who anoints priests or kings with the anointing oil is exempt. What is the reason? As it is written, “and whoever puts any of it upon a stranger” — we require that he be a stranger from beginning to end (i.e., not a person who was once eligible for anointing).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse — definition of “stranger” for the anointing-oil prohibition.

What Is Learned

One who anoints a kohen or king is exempt, because “stranger” means one who was never eligible for anointing from the outset.
