Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Yerushalmi Shekalim 1:3

English: The Yerushalmi records two interpretations of “all who pass among the counted”: Rabbi Yehudah understands it as everyone who passed through the Sea of Reeds, while Rabbi Nechemyah understands it as everyone included among those counted.

In context: See the cited source for the full section.

Type of Learning

Other — inference from redundant wording in the verse; not one of Rabbi Yishmael’s 13 middot.

What Is Learned

The phrase “all who pass among the counted” is interpreted as defining who is included in the half-shekel obligation, with two tannaitic readings preserved by the Yerushalmi.
