English: The Gemara relates that people followed a Kohen Gadol after his Yom Kippur service, but when they saw Shemaya and Avtalion they left him and followed them. When Shemaya and Avtalion later came to take leave of the Kohen Gadol, he insulted them; they answered that descendants of Aharon who act like Aharon are welcome, whereas a descendant of Aharon who does not act like Aharon is not.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse.

What Is Learned

The title and lineage of the Kohen Gadol do not substitute for conduct worthy of Aharon; honor follows righteous deeds.
