תַּנְיָא, רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר: כְּשֶׁיִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹשִׂין רְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם עוֹשִׂין שְׁמִטָּה אַחַת לְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים תִּזְרַע שָׂדֶךָ, וּכְשֶׁאֵין עוֹשִׂין רְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם עוֹשִׂין אַרְבַּע שְׁמִטּוֹת בְּשָׁבוּעַ אֶחָד.

English: Rabbi Eliezer taught: When Israel does the will of the Omnipresent, they observe one sabbatical year in seven, as it says, “Six years you shall sow your land.” When they do not do His will, they observe four sabbatical years in one seven-year cycle.
