Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Mechilta
אֵין שִׁלּוּחַ כָּאן אֶלָּא לִוּוּי. וּמָה שָׂכָר נָטַל עַל זֶה? ״לֹא תְתַעֵב מִצְרִי״.

English: The word “sent” here is understood as accompaniment: Pharaoh and the Egyptians accompanied Israel when they left. What reward did they receive for this? The Torah later says, “You shall not abhor an Egyptian.”

Type of Learning

Midrashic lexical interpretation of “shelach” as accompaniment

What Is Learned

Chazal read Pharaoh’s sending of Israel as an act of accompaniment, and connect that act with the Torah’s later restriction against abhorring Egyptians.
