Sefaria — Exodus 12:14
Sefaria — Torah Temimah on Exodus 12:14
Sefaria — Chagigah 10b
E-Daf — Chagigah 10b
English: Rav Pappa said to Abaye: From where [do we know] that “and you shall celebrate it as a festival to Hashem” means slaughtering? Perhaps the Merciful One means only “make a festival celebration”? But if so, when it says “and they shall celebrate a festival to Me in the wilderness,” is that also only celebration? Yet it is written: “And Moshe said, You too shall give into our hand sacrifices and burnt-offerings.”
Proof that חַג in this context means sacrificial celebration, not mere festivity.
“Celebrate it as a festival to Hashem” requires bringing the chagigah offering, not only joyous assembly.
