Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Nedarim 25a

English: Idolatry is called “god,” as it is written: “And against all the gods of Egypt.”

Type of Learning

Lexical proof-text: Scripture itself applies the word אֱלֹהִים to avodah zarah.

What Is Learned

When administering oaths “on the mind of the Omnipresent,” one must be careful that the swearer’s private intent not redirect the name toward idolatry, since idols too are called “god” in Scripture.
