Core Text — Pesachim 41a

English: The Sages taught: One might think that one who ate an olive’s bulk raw is liable — therefore it says “You shall not eat of it underdone or cooked”; underdone and cooked I told you, and not raw. One might think raw is permitted — therefore it says “but roasted with fire.”

Type of Learning

Exclusionary derash: the negative commandment covers na and bashel; raw is barred only by the positive mitzvah of fire-roasting.

What Is Learned

Liability under the negative commandment is for underdone or cooked meat, not for raw; raw is still forbidden by the positive command to roast with fire.
