Derasha 93 — Shemos 5:2

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֔ה מִ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶשְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹל֔וֹ לְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֤א יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְגַ֥ם אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֥א אֲשַׁלֵּֽחַ׃

אָמַר לָהֶם הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל: חוֹשֵׁק אֲנִי בָּכֶם, שֶׁאֲפִלּוּ בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁאֲנִי מַשְׁפִּיעַ לָכֶם גְּדוּלָּה, אַתֶּם מְמַעֲטִין עַצְמְכֶם לְפָנַי. נָתַתִּי גְּדוּלָּה לְאַבְרָהָם, אָמַר ״וְאָנֹכִי עָפָר וָאֵפֶר״; לְמֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן, אָמְרוּ ״וְנַחְנוּ מָה״; לְדָוִד, אָמַר ״וְאָנֹכִי תוֹלַעַת וְלֹא אִישׁ״. אֲבָל עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים אֵינָן כֵּן: נָתַתִּי גְּדוּלָּה לְפַרְעֹה, אָמַר ״מִי ה׳ אֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁמַע בְּקֹלוֹ״.

English: “The Holy One said to Israel: “I desire you, because even when I bestow greatness upon you, you make yourselves small before Me.” Abraham said, “I am dust and ashes”; Moses and Aaron said, “What are we?”; David said, “I am a worm and not a man.” Pharaoh, by contrast, said, “Who is Hashem that I should heed His voice?””
