Chazal

Core Text
מפני מה נקרא יוסף עצמות בחייו? מפני שלא מיחה בכבוד אביו, דקאמרי ליה ״עבדך אבינו״, ולא אמר להו ולא מידי.

English: For what reason was Joseph called “Bones” even during his lifetime? Because he did not protest for his father’s honor when they said to him, “Your servant our father,” and he said nothing.

On the daf / in context: Sotah 13a explains why Yosef was called “bones” even during his lifetime: he did not protest when his brothers called Yaakov “your servant, our father.”

Type of Learning

Ethical derash on Joseph’s failure to protest language that diminished his father.

What Is Learned

The name “bones” is treated as a measure-for-measure consequence of Joseph’s silence when his brothers repeatedly called Jacob his servant.
