TT #71 · Parashas Vayechi · Passuk 50:14
After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
Torah Temimah cites Sotah 13a.
Sotah 13a discusses Joseph’s role in Jacob’s burial and reconciles the wording of the verse with the participation of Jacob’s sons.
English: “After he had buried his father.” Did Joseph bury him himself? Scripture says, “And his sons buried him.” Rather, all occupied themselves with the burial, and Joseph attended to it more than all of them. They said: Let him be; his honor is greater among kings than among ordinary people.
Close reading reconciling Joseph’s participation in the burial with the verse stating that Jacob’s sons buried him.
Joseph’s special role is understood as a matter of honor befitting a king, while the broader burial was carried out by all who accompanied Jacob.
