Core Text

English: Rav Nachman and Rabbi Yitzchak were sitting at a meal. After they had eaten, Rabbi Yitzchak said to him: Rabbi Yochanan said this: “Jacob our father did not die.”

On the daf / in context: Taanis 5b presents the same teaching in the setting of Rav Nachman and Rabbi Yitzchak at a meal; Rabbi Yitzchak then reports Rabbi Yochanan’s statement that Yaakov Avinu did not die, which leads into Rav Nachman’s objection.

Type of Learning

Continuation of the Taanis 5b aggadic context surrounding the statement “Jacob our father did not die.”

What Is Learned

This second unit preserves the surrounding dialogue in the same sugya rather than duplicating the first unit’s full derivation. The statement is introduced after the meal and immediately prompts Rav Nachman’s challenge about the mourning, embalming, and burial of Jacob.
