The blessings of your father surpass the blessings of my ancestors, to the utmost bounds of the eternal hills; may they rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the elect of his brothers.

Chazal

Core Text
נזיר אחיו. א״ר מלאי משום רבי יצחק מגדלאה, מיום שפירש יוסף מאחיו לא טעם טעם יין, שנאמר ״ולקדקד נזיר אחיו״.

English: “A nazirite from his brothers.” Rabbi Malai said in the name of Rabbi Yitzchak of Migdal: From the day Joseph separated from his brothers, he did not taste wine, as it is stated, “and upon the crown of the one separated from his brothers.”

On the daf / in context: Shabbos 139a derives Yosef’s abstention from wine from the description of him as a nazirite from his brothers, dating that abstention from the time he separated from them.

Type of Learning

Derash on Yosef’s lifelong separation and abstention from wine.

What Is Learned

The verse’s title for Yosef as “nazir” is read as evidence that he abstained from wine from the time he was separated from his brothers.
