Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: There was a man who used to go about saying “On the seashore the thorns are like cypresses.” They investigated and found that he came from Zevulun, as it is written of him “Zevulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea.”

On the daf / in context: A person’s habitual praise of the seashore is taken as a sign that he descends from the tribe whose territory is described by that verse.

Type of Learning

Identification by speech grounded in the tribal blessing.

What Is Learned

Love of the seashore is characteristic of the descendants of Zevulun, whose portion is “at the shore of the sea.”
